Mandarin Chinese Level 2 verb / adjective

明白

míngbai

/míŋ.bai˨˩˦/

Definition

To understand something clearly; also used as an adjective meaning "clear" or "obvious."

Example

你明白我的意思吗?

Show translation

Do you understand what I mean?

Etymology

A compound of 明 (míng, "bright, clear") + 白 (bái, "white, plain"). Both characters independently carry meanings of clarity and brightness, reinforcing the idea of something becoming fully visible or lucid to the mind. The pairing dates to Classical Chinese, where 明白 described things that were self-evidently clear.

Cultural note

In Chinese conversation, 明白 is often used as a one-word response — simply saying "明白!" (Míngbai!) signals that you've fully understood an instruction, much like "Got it!" or "Roger!" in English. It's especially common in professional or military contexts. Be careful not to confuse it with 知道 (zhīdào), which means "to know (a fact)"; 明白 implies genuine comprehension, not just awareness.
