Mandarin Chinese Level 2 verb

/na˨˩˦/

Definition

To hold, take, or pick up an object with your hand.

Example

你能帮我拿一下这个袋子吗?

Show translation

Can you help me carry this bag?

Etymology

An ancient Chinese character originally depicting a hand grasping an object. Its structure combines 合 (hé, "to join/close") over 手 (shǒu, "hand"), visually suggesting fingers closing around something to hold it.

Cultural note

拿 is one of several "hand-action" verbs in Mandarin that can be combined with other verbs to show how an action is performed — e.g. 拿走 (ná zǒu, "take away"), 拿出来 (ná chū lái, "take out"). It is also used figuratively, as in 拿主意 (ná zhǔyi, "to make a decision / take charge of an idea"). Be careful not to confuse it with 握 (wò), which specifically means to grip or clasp tightly.
