Mandarin Chinese Level 2 verb

认识

rènshi

/ɻən˧˥.ɕi˥˩/

Definition

To know or recognize someone; to meet and become acquainted with a person.

Example

我很高兴认识你。

Show translation

I am very happy to meet you.

Etymology

Composed of 认 (rèn, "to recognize, to acknowledge") + 识 (shí/shi, "knowledge, awareness"). Together they form a compound meaning "to recognize and know," covering both acquaintance with people and recognition of characters or facts. The character 认 contains the radical 讠(speech/言) suggesting verbal acknowledgment, while 识 contains 讠 plus 只, historically evoking "knowing by sound."

Cultural note

In Chinese social culture, 认识 is the standard phrase used when meeting someone new — 很高兴认识你 ("Nice to meet you") is ubiquitous. Note that 认识 implies an ongoing state of knowing, not just the moment of introduction: 我认识她 means "I know her," not merely "I met her once." Distinguish it from 知道 (zhīdào), which means "to know a fact," and 见面 (jiànmiàn), which means "to meet up (physically)." A common learner error is using 知道 for people — say 我认识他, never 我知道他 to mean "I know him."
