Mandarin Chinese Level 1 verb

睡觉

shuì jiào

/ʂweɪ̯⁵¹ tɕiɑʊ̯⁵¹/

Definition

To sleep; to go to bed and rest during the night or a nap.

Example

我每天晚上十一点睡觉。

Show translation

I go to sleep at eleven o'clock every night.

Etymology

睡 (shuì) means "to sleep" and has appeared in Chinese texts since at least the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE), depicting heavy-lidded eyes. 觉 (jiào) originally meant "to awaken" or "to become aware," but in this compound it shifted toward the act of sleeping itself — a classic Chinese linguistic twist where the result (waking refreshed) names the whole process.

Cultural note

Nap culture (午睡 wǔshuì, "midday sleep") is deeply embedded in Chinese life — many schools and workplaces observe a midday rest period after lunch. Asking someone 你睡了吗?("Did you sleep?") after noon is a warm, casual check-in, not an intrusive question. Parents frequently urge children to sleep early with the phrase 早点睡觉 (zǎo diǎn shuìjiào), reflecting a strong cultural value placed on adequate rest.
