问题

wèntí

/wən˥˩.tʰi˧˥/

Definition

A question you ask, or a problem that needs to be solved.

Example

你有什么问题吗?

Show translation

Do you have any questions?

Etymology

A compound of 问 (wèn, "to ask") + 题 (tí, "topic; subject"). 问 descends from Old Chinese *mɯːnʔ, meaning to inquire or question. 题 originally referred to the forehead (the part of the face that "faces" a matter), then shifted to mean a topic or heading. Together, the compound came to mean both "a question posed" and "a matter requiring attention."

Cultural note

In Chinese communication culture, asking 有问题吗?("Any problems/questions?") is extremely common in classrooms, workplaces, and customer service. Note that 问题 can mean both "question" and "problem" depending on context — a subtle but important dual meaning. Saying 没问题 (méi wèntí) means "No problem!" and is one of the most widely used reassuring phrases in daily life.
