Mandarin Chinese Level 1 verb

喜欢

xǐhuān

Definition

To like or enjoy something or someone; to be fond of a person, activity, or thing.

Example

我很喜欢在公园里散步。

Show translation

I really like walking in the park.

Etymology

A compound of 喜 (xǐ, "joy; to rejoice"), which dates to oracle-bone inscriptions depicting a drum and a mouth suggesting celebratory sound, and 欢 (huān, "joyful; enthusiastic"). Together they form a word whose two halves are near-synonyms, a common reinforcement pattern in Classical and Modern Chinese that strengthens the overall meaning.

Cultural note

In Chinese, 喜欢 (xǐhuān) covers a wide range of affection — from liking a snack to having a crush on someone. When it refers to romantic interest, context (or a slight blush) usually makes it clear. Unlike English "love" (爱, ài), 喜欢 is lighter and safer for everyday use. Note: 喜欢 is a stative verb in Mandarin grammar — it is NOT followed by 着/了/过 in most standard usages the way action verbs are.
