Mandarin Chinese Level 2 verb

xiǎng

Definition

To think, to want, or to miss someone or something. It can express a thought, a wish, or a feeling of longing.

Example

我很想回家看看我的父母。

Show translation

I really miss going home to see my parents.

Etymology

想 is composed of the phonetic component 相 (xiāng, "mutual / facing each other") above the semantic component 心 (xīn, "heart/mind"). The combination suggests the mind actively turning toward something — whether in thought, desire, or longing. Attested in classical Chinese with the core meaning "to think / to ponder."

Cultural note

想 is one of the most versatile verbs in Mandarin. Its three core meanings — to think (我想你说得对, "I think you're right"), to want (我想喝茶, "I want to drink tea"), and to miss (我想你, "I miss you") — are all extremely common. Crucially, 我想你 means "I miss you," NOT "I think of you" in a romantic-neutral sense — English speakers should note this false-friend trap with the English word "think." In mainland China, 想家 ("to miss home") is a deeply resonant phrase, especially for the hundreds of millions who migrate for work or study.
