笑
xiào
/ɕi̯ɑʊ̯⁵¹/
Definition
To smile or laugh; to show happiness or amusement with your face and sometimes voice.
Example
她看到小猫就笑了。
Show translation
She smiled as soon as she saw the kitten.
Etymology
An ancient pictograph. The top component is 竹 (bamboo), historically associated with playful instruments, and the bottom is 夭 (a bending figure). Together they evoked the image of a person bending over with laughter. Attested in oracle-bone contexts, 笑 has retained its meaning virtually unchanged for over two millennia.
Cultural note
In Chinese culture, smiling and laughing carry strong social weight. The phrase 笑一笑,十年少 ("One smile takes ten years off your age") is a beloved proverb encouraging positivity. However, note that Chinese speakers may sometimes smile or laugh in situations of embarrassment or discomfort — it is a social softener, not always a sign of amusement. For English speakers: 笑 covers both "smile" and "laugh"; context tells you which. To specify smiling, you can say 微笑 (wēixiào).
