Mandarin Chinese Level 2 verb

休息

xiūxi

/ɕiou̯˥ ɕi˥/

Definition

To rest or take a break from work or activity.

Example

工作了一天,我们需要休息一下。

Show translation

After working all day, we need to rest for a bit.

Etymology

Composed of 休 (xiū) — a pictograph of a person leaning against a tree, meaning "to rest" — and 息 (xī), meaning "breath" or "to cease." Together they reinforce the idea of stopping activity and breathing easy. 息 itself contains 自 (self/nose) above 心 (heart), evoking the quiet rhythm of breathing at rest.

Cultural note

Taking a midday rest (午休, wǔxiū) is deeply ingrained in Chinese daily life — many schools and offices still observe a post-lunch break. Telling someone 好好休息 (hǎohao xiūxi, "rest up well") is a common and warm parting phrase, especially when someone is sick or tired. It's a culturally important expression of care.
