Mandarin Chinese Level 1 verb

zhǎo

Definition

To look for or search for something or someone.

Example

你在找什么?

Show translation

What are you looking for?

Etymology

The character 找 (zhǎo) is a relatively modern formation, appearing prominently in vernacular Chinese. It combines the hand radical 扌(hand) with 戈 (gē, a type of ancient halberd weapon), though the connection is functional rather than semantic — the character was likely repurposed or simplified in colloquial usage to represent the act of reaching out to search for something.

Cultural note

找 is extremely versatile in everyday Mandarin. Beyond searching for objects, it commonly means "to look someone up" or "to seek someone out," as in 我去找他 ("I'll go find him / I'll go see him"). It also appears in the commercial phrase 找钱 (zhǎo qián), meaning "to give change" — a usage that surprises many learners expecting 找 to only mean "search."
