Show translation

Can you keep the secret to yourself?

Etymology

From Middle High German *behalten*, from the prefix *be-* (intensifying) + *halten* ("to hold"). The root *halten* traces back to Old High German *haltan* and ultimately to Proto-Germanic *haldaną*, meaning "to tend, guard, keep." The *be-* prefix shifted the meaning from the physical act of holding to the idea of retaining possession or keeping something in a particular state.

Cultural note

German has several idiomatic uses of *behalten* that go beyond simple ownership. *Im Gedächtnis behalten* ("to keep in memory") is a common phrase for remembering something. *Recht behalten* ("to remain right") is a very common expression meaning that someone's prediction or opinion turns out to be correct — something English expresses as "to be proved right." Learners sometimes confuse *behalten* (to keep/retain) with *halten* (to hold/stop) — the *be-* prefix signals a lasting or completed retention rather than a momentary grip.
