German Level 1 verb

brauchen

/ˈbʁaʊ̯xən/

Definition

To need something or someone; to require something in order to do or achieve something.

Example

Ich brauche mehr Zeit für diese Aufgabe.

Show translation

I need more time for this task.

Etymology

From Middle High German *brûchen*, from Old High German *brûhhan* ("to use, enjoy, make use of"), from Proto-Germanic *brūkaną*. Cognate with English *brook* (archaic: "to tolerate") and Dutch *gebruiken* ("to use"). The modern German sense shifted from "to use/enjoy" toward "to need/require" over the medieval period.

Cultural note

In colloquial German, *brauchen* is frequently used with the infinitive without *zu*: *Du brauchst nicht kommen* ("You don't need to come") instead of the standard *Du brauchst nicht zu kommen*. The form without *zu* is very common in speech but considered non-standard in formal writing — a useful marker of register awareness for advanced learners. Also note: *brauchen* should not be confused with *gebrauchen* ("to make use of"), which is slightly more formal and less common in everyday speech.
