Show translation
Can you recommend a good restaurant to me?
Etymology
From Middle High German *empfelhen*, from Old High German *inpfelahan* ("to entrust, hand over"). Related to *befehlen* ("to command") — both share the Proto-Germanic root *felhaną* ("to commit, entrust"). Over time, *empfehlen* shifted from "to entrust something to someone" to "to vouch for" and finally to "to recommend."
Cultural note
*Empfehlen* is everyday and indispensable in German service culture — waitstaff will say *Was empfehlen Sie?* ("What do you recommend?") and doctors, teachers, and colleagues reach for it constantly. Watch out for the strong verb forms: the stem vowel changes in the present tense (ich empfehle → er **empfiehlt**), and the past participle is *empfohlen*, not *empfehlt*. A common learner error is to treat it as a weak verb.
