Show translation
I can't afford a new laptop.
Etymology
From Middle High German *leisten* ("to follow, fulfill, perform"), rooted in Old High German *leistjan*, related to *Leiste* (a track or groove). The core sense evolved from "following a path or obligation" to "fulfilling, performing, or affording" something — which is why it covers both achievement (*gute Arbeit leisten*, to do good work) and purchasing power (*sich etwas leisten*, to afford something).
Cultural note
German speakers use *sich leisten* very naturally in both financial and metaphorical contexts. Crucially, it can also mean to allow oneself a liberty or indulgence — e.g., *Du kannst es dir nicht leisten, unhöflich zu sein* ("You can't afford to be rude"). Don't confuse it with *verleisten* (not a standard word) or *leisten* without *sich*, which means to accomplish/render (e.g., *Erste Hilfe leisten* = to provide first aid).
