German Level 3 verb

sich gewöhnen

/zɪç ɡəˈvøːnən/

Definition

To get used to something; to become comfortable with a new situation or habit over time.

Example

Ich gewöhne mich langsam an die neue Stadt.

Show translation

I am slowly getting used to the new city.

Etymology

From Middle High German *gewonen*, related to *Wohnen* ("to dwell, to live") and the noun *Gewohnheit* ("habit, custom"). The reflexive prefix *sich* marks the subject as undergoing an internal change — literally, "to make oneself dwell (in a new state)."

Cultural note

Germans use *sich gewöhnen an* (always followed by the accusative) very naturally in everyday speech — e.g., when moving cities, starting a job, or adapting to different weather. Don't confuse it with *gewohnt sein* ("to be used to something already"), which implies a completed habit rather than an ongoing process of adjustment.
