German Level 3 verb

überzeugen

/yːbɐˈʦɔʏ̯ɡən/

Definition

To convince or persuade someone that something is true or worth doing.

Example

Er konnte sie von seiner Idee überzeugen.

Show translation

He was able to convince her of his idea.

Etymology

From *über-* ("over, beyond") + *zeugen* ("to testify, bear witness"), related to Old High German *ziugōn* ("to pull, draw"). The original sense was "to prove conclusively by testimony," which evolved into the modern meaning of persuading someone's mind so thoroughly that doubt is overcome.

Cultural note

Germans tend to value logic and evidence in argumentation, so *überzeugen* carries a nuance of genuine, reasoned persuasion rather than mere rhetorical pressure — the latter might be described more critically as *überreden* (to talk someone into something). The distinction is subtle but real: you can *überreden* someone against their better judgement, but *überzeugen* implies they are actually won over. Watch for the reflexive form *sich überzeugen* (to convince yourself / to check for yourself), e.g. *Überzeug dich selbst!* — "See for yourself!"
