German Level 3 verb

vermuten

/fɛɐ̯ˈmuːtən/

Definition

To think that something is probably true, without being completely sure.

Example

Ich vermute, dass er heute nicht kommt.

Show translation

I suspect that he is not coming today.

Etymology

From the prefix *ver-* (intensifying) + *muten*, an older verb meaning "to expect or surmise," related to *Mut* (courage, spirit) in the sense of inclining one's mind toward something. The *ver-* prefix shifts the meaning toward forming an inner assumption. Related to English *mood* (in its archaic grammatical/mental sense) via Proto-Germanic *mōdaz*.

Cultural note

Germans tend to use *vermuten* in both everyday speech and formal writing to hedge a claim politely — a valued communicative habit in German culture. It is softer than *glauben* ("to believe") and more intellectual-sounding than *denken* ("to think"). Watch out for the false friend trap: English "to mute" has nothing to do with *vermuten*.
