versuchen

/fɛɐ̯ˈzuːxn̩/

Definition

To try to do something; to make an effort or attempt.

Show translation

I try to learn more German every day.

Etymology

From Middle High German *versuochen*, from the prefix *ver-* (intensifying or completive) + *suchen* ("to seek, look for"), rooted in Old High German *suohhen*. The semantic shift from "to seek out" to "to attempt" mirrors a similar development in Latin *temptare* (to try) and English *seek out*. The prefix *ver-* here gives the verb a directed, purposeful quality — not just seeking, but actively putting something to the test.

Cultural note

Germans often use *versuchen* in a modest or hedging way — saying *Ich versuche es* ("I'll try") can sometimes be a polite way of not fully committing to a promise, similar to English. Note the false friend trap: English "to tempt" shares a Latin cousin (*tentare/temptare*), but *versuchen* is not used to mean tempt in modern German — *verführen* or *in Versuchung führen* serve that purpose instead.
