German Level 3 verb

vorschlagen

/ˈfoːɐ̯ˌʃlaːɡn̩/

Definition

To suggest or propose an idea, plan, or option to someone.

Example

Ich schlage vor, dass wir morgen früher anfangen.

Show translation

I suggest that we start earlier tomorrow.

Etymology

From Middle High German *vürschlahen*, a compound of *vor-* ("before, forward") + *schlagen* ("to strike, hit"). The semantic shift from "to strike forward" to "to put forward an idea" mirrors similar metaphorical extensions in English ("to throw out a suggestion") and French (*proposer*).

Cultural note

In German workplace culture, directness is valued, and *vorschlagen* is a go-to verb for structured meetings (*Besprechungen*). Watch out for the separable prefix: in main clauses, *vor-* splits off to the end ("Ich schlage … vor"), which often trips up learners who may leave it out entirely.
