vorschlagen
/foːɐ̯ˈʃlaːɡən/
Definition
To suggest or propose an idea, plan, or option to someone.

Ich schlage vor, dass wir morgen früh starten.
Show translation
I suggest that we leave early tomorrow.
Etymology
From Middle High German *vürschlahen*, a compound of *vor-* ("forward, before") + *schlagen* ("to strike, hit"). The metaphor is of "striking forward" an idea — putting it on the table for consideration. *Schlagen* itself traces back to Proto-Germanic *slahaną*.
Cultural note
Germans tend to value directness in discussion, so *vorschlagen* is a very everyday word in meetings, family decisions, and casual planning alike. Watch out for the separable prefix: in main clauses the *vor-* detaches and moves to the end — *Ich schlage das vor* — which can trip up learners who expect the verb to stay together.
