German Level 3 verb

vorschlagen

/ˈfoːɐ̯ʃlaːɡən/

Definition

To suggest or propose an idea, plan, or option to someone.

Example

Kannst du ein gutes Restaurant vorschlagen?

Show translation

Can you suggest a good restaurant?

Etymology

From Middle High German *vürschlahen*, a compound of *vor-* ("before, forth") and *schlagen* ("to strike, beat"). The sense of "putting forward an idea" developed from the notion of striking something out in front of others for consideration — the same root that gives English "slay" and connects to the Proto-Germanic *\*slaganan*.

Cultural note

In German workplace and academic culture, making a *Vorschlag* (noun form) is considered an important professional skill. Meetings often include a dedicated phase for proposals before decisions are made. Note that *vorschlagen* is a separable verb: in a main clause, the prefix detaches — *Ich schlage das vor* — which trips up many English speakers who expect the verb to stay whole.
