German Level 3 verb

vorschlagen

/foːɐ̯ˈʃlaːɡən/

Definition

To suggest or propose an idea, plan, or option to someone.

Example

Ich schlage vor, dass wir morgen früh starten.

Show translation

I suggest that we leave early tomorrow.

Etymology

From Middle High German *vürschlahen*, a compound of *vor-* (before, forward) and *schlagen* (to strike, beat). The metaphor of "striking first" with an idea is shared across Germanic languages.

Cultural note

In German work and academic culture, making a concrete *Vorschlag* (proposal) is valued over vague discussion. Meetings (*Besprechungen*) often revolve around someone formally *vorschlagend* a course of action. Note that *vorschlagen* is a separable verb: the prefix *vor-* splits off in main clauses — "Ich schlage … vor" — a common stumbling block for learners.
