German Level 3 verb

vorschlagen

/ˈfoːɐ̯ˌʃlaːɡn̩/

Definition

To suggest or propose an idea, plan, or option to someone.

Example

Kannst du ein gutes Restaurant vorschlagen?

Show translation

Can you suggest a good restaurant?

Etymology

From *vor-* ("forward, before") + *schlagen* ("to strike, hit"), literally "to strike forward." The metaphorical leap to "put forward an idea" is shared with English *propose* (Latin *pro-* + *ponere*, "to place forward") — in both cases, an idea is figuratively thrust into the conversation.

Cultural note

Germans tend to value directness, so *vorschlagen* is used comfortably in both casual and professional settings without sounding pushy. In meetings (*Besprechungen*), *Ich möchte vorschlagen, dass…* ("I'd like to suggest that…") is a standard, polite opener. Don't confuse with *behaupten* (to claim/assert) — *vorschlagen* is an invitation, not a statement of fact.
