German Level 3 verb

vorschlagen

/foːɐ̯ˈʃlaːɡən/

Definition

To suggest or propose an idea, plan, or option to someone.

Example

Sie schlug vor, das Meeting auf Montag zu verschieben.

Show translation

She suggested moving the meeting to Monday.

Etymology

From Middle High German *vürschlahen*, a compound of *vor-* ("fore-, in front") + *schlagen* ("to strike, hit"). The notion of "striking forward" evolved into "putting forward" an idea.

Cultural note

In German professional culture, making a *Vorschlag* (suggestion) is generally welcomed and seen as constructive participation. Germans tend to value directness, so suggestions are often phrased plainly rather than hedged with excessive politeness.
