Definition
To imagine something, or to introduce oneself or someone else to others.

Show translation
Can you imagine a life without music?
Etymology
A separable verb formed from the prefix *vor-* ("in front of, forward") + *stellen* ("to place, to put"). The core idea is literally "to place something in front of (the mind's eye)," giving rise to the sense of mentally picturing something. The reflexive use *sich vorstellen* meaning "to introduce oneself" follows the same logic: you put yourself forward for someone else to see.
Cultural note
German has two distinct uses that English learners must keep apart: *sich (Dat.) etwas vorstellen* = "to imagine something" (*Ich kann mir das vorstellen* — "I can imagine that"), and *sich (Akk.) vorstellen* = "to introduce oneself." Mixing up the dative and accusative reflexive here is one of the most common intermediate-level errors. Also note: in a job-interview context, *ein Vorstellungsgespräch* (lit. "an imagination-conversation") is the standard word for a job interview — another nod to the "putting yourself forward" sense.
