Etymology
θ± (hana) is a native Japanese word (εθͺ, *wago*) with roots tracing back to Old Japanese *pana*. The kanji θ± was borrowed from Classical Chinese, where it also means "flower," and it replaced the older phonetic spelling ζ³’ε₯. The character itself depicts a plant (θΈ, the grass radical θΉ) above a transforming form (ε), symbolizing a plant in bloom β something that "transforms" into beauty.
Cultural note
θ± holds an extraordinary place in Japanese culture. It is central to *hanami* (θ±θ¦, "flower viewing"), the beloved springtime tradition of gathering under cherry blossom (ζ‘) trees. In classical poetry and literature, θ± alone β without any qualifier β almost always refers specifically to the cherry blossom, considered the quintessential flower of Japan. The word also appears in *ikebana* (ηγθ±), the art of flower arrangement, and in countless proverbs, such as θ±γγε£ε ("dumplings over flowers"), meaning one prefers practical things over beauty.
