Show translation
I ate dinner together with my family.
Etymology
Compound of 家 (*ka/ie*, "house, home") + 族 (*zoku*, "clan, tribe, group"). The character 族 originally depicted an arrow under a banner, symbolizing a military clan gathered under one flag — over time it broadened to mean any group sharing a common bond, especially blood relatives.
Cultural note
In Japanese culture, the concept of family (家族) has traditionally centered on the *ie* (家) system — the household as a multigenerational unit. Even today, decisions about careers, marriages, and living arrangements often involve the wider family in a way that may feel more collective than in many Western contexts. Note that 家族 typically refers to one's *own* family; to refer to someone else's family politely, the honorific form ご家族 (*go-kazoku*) is used.
