Japanese Level 2 adjective (na-adjective)

静か

shizuka

/ɕizɯka/

Definition

Quiet; calm and free from noise or disturbance.

Example

図書館の中はとても静かです。

Show translation

It is very quiet inside the library.

Etymology

From classical Japanese 閑か (shizuka), rooted in the verb 鎮まる (shizumaru, "to settle down / become still"). The kanji 静 carries the meaning of stillness and tranquility, and the word has remained largely unchanged since the Heian period (794–1185).

Cultural note

Quietness holds a deep cultural value in Japan — the concept of 静けさ (shizukesa, "stillness") is closely linked to Zen aesthetics and the appreciation of subtle beauty (wabi-sabi). 静か also doubles as a common Japanese given name, especially for women, evoking a gentle, calm character. Learners should note that 静か is a *na*-adjective: use 静かな before a noun (e.g. 静かな夜, "a quiet night") and 静かです as a predicate.
