Japanese Level 2 verb

決める

kimeru

/de̞.ki.me̞.ɾu/

Definition

To decide or determine something; to make a choice or set something as final.

Example

明日の会議の時間を決めましょう。

Show translation

Let's decide on the time for tomorrow's meeting.

Etymology

From the verb root 決 (*ki-*), derived from the kanji 決 meaning "to decide, to settle, to cut off (uncertainty)," combined with the transitive suffix *-meru* (→ "to make [something] decided"). The kanji 決 itself traces to Classical Chinese *jué*, depicting water breaking through a dam — the moment a path is irrevocably chosen.

Cultural note

Japanese culture places great social weight on the act of deciding, particularly in group settings. The word 決める is often used in the context of *nemawashi* (根回し) — the behind-the-scenes consensus-building that precedes a formal decision. Saying something is *まだ決まっていない* ("not yet decided") signals that consultation is still ongoing and is not considered evasive. Note: 決める (transitive, "to decide something") vs. 決まる (intransitive, "something is decided") — a common learner stumbling block.
