Japanese Level 2 verb

考える

kangaeru

/kaŋ.ɡa.e.ɾɯ/

Definition

To think about something; to consider or reflect on a problem or idea.

Example

よく考えてから、答えを教えてください。

Show translation

Please think carefully and then give me your answer.

Etymology

From classical Japanese 勘がへる (*kangafu), combining 勘 (kan, "intuition; sense") with 替へる (kafu, "to change; to consider alternately"). The modern form 考える settled in the Edo period, shifting from the classical 考ふ (kangafu). The kanji 考 itself is shared with the Chinese concept of "examining" or "verifying," and appears in words like 考察 (kōsatsu, "investigation").

Cultural note

In Japanese communication culture, taking visible time to 考える before answering is often seen as respectful and conscientious — unlike in some Western contexts where a quick response signals confidence. The phrase よく考えます ("I will think it over carefully") is also a common, polite way to decline a request without saying no directly.
