Japanese Level 2 verb

困る

komaru

/koˈmɯ.ɾɯ/

Definition

To be in trouble, to feel stuck or unsure what to do in a difficult situation.

Example

財布を忘れて、本当に困った。

Show translation

I forgot my wallet and was really in trouble.

Etymology

From classical Japanese 込む (komu), meaning "to be crowded or packed in," extended metaphorically to the feeling of being hemmed in or trapped by a problem. The kanji 困 itself depicts a tree (木) enclosed within a box (囗), visually suggesting something confined and unable to grow — a perfect image of being stuck.

Cultural note

困る is one of the first verbs Japanese learners encounter for expressing distress, and it appears constantly in daily life: at convenience store counters, in workplace apologies, and in polite refusals. The phrase 困ります (komarimasu) — the polite non-past form — is a socially softer way to say "that's not acceptable" or "please don't do that," widely used in customer service to avoid direct confrontation. Learners should note it is *not* as strong as 怒る (okoru, to get angry); it conveys helplessness and discomfort rather than rage.
