Etymology

涙 is an ancient native Japanese word (yamato kotoba). Its Old Japanese form was *namita*, attested in the *Man'yōshū* (8th century), later shifting to *namida* through a regular /t/→/d/ lenition between vowels. The kanji 涙 combines 水 (water) and 戻 (return/flow back), evoking the image of water streaming from the eye.

Cultural note

In Japanese culture, openly shedding tears (especially tears of joy or gratitude) is often considered a sign of sincerity and deep feeling rather than weakness. The phrase 涙もろい (namida-moroi, "easily moved to tears") is used affectionately. Tearful farewells at graduation ceremonies (卒業式) are a deeply ingrained cultural moment. Be careful not to confuse 涙 (tear/crying) with 汗 (ase, sweat) — both involve liquid from the body but in very different emotional contexts.
