Japanese Level 1 noun

買い物

kaimono

Definition

The activity of going to shops to buy things; shopping.

Example

週末に家族と買い物に行きます。

Show translation

I go shopping with my family on the weekend.

Etymology

Compound of 買い (kai), the stem of the verb 買う (kau, "to buy"), and 物 (mono, "thing/goods"). Together, 買い物 literally means "buying things," a pattern common in Japanese where verb stems combine with 物 to form activity nouns (cf. 食べ物, "food/things to eat").

Cultural note

Shopping is deeply woven into Japanese daily life. Department stores (デパート, depāto) and covered shopping arcades (商店街, shōtengai) are cultural landmarks. It is also common to say 買い物に行く ("go shopping") or お買い物 with the honorific お (o-), especially in polite or retail contexts. Shops frequently greet customers with いらっしゃいませ, and the service culture (おもてなし) makes shopping a notable experience for visitors.
