Her dream is to become a doctor.
Etymology
夢 (yume) traces back to Old Japanese and appears in the Man'yōshū (8th century), one of Japan's oldest poetry collections. The kanji 夢 combines 艹 (grass/plants) over 罒 (a net/eye radical) over 夕 (evening), evoking the hazy, vision-like quality of sleep. Its meaning extended naturally from nocturnal visions to waking aspirations — a semantic broadening shared by the English word "dream."
Cultural note
In Japanese culture, 夢 carries a romantic, almost poetic weight. The phrase 夢を持つ (yume wo motsu, "to hold a dream") is a common encouragement to young people, used frequently in school speeches and graduation ceremonies. Notably, 初夢 (hatsuyume) — the first dream of the New Year — is a beloved tradition; dreaming of Mt. Fuji, a hawk, or an eggplant (一富士二鷹三茄子) is considered a lucky omen for the year ahead.
