手伝う
tetsudau
/te̞tɕɯ̟ꜜdau/
Definition
To help or assist someone with a task. It describes actively lending a hand to another person.
Example
引っ越しを手伝ってくれてありがとう。
Show translation
Thank you for helping me move house.
Etymology
Composed of 手 (*te*, "hand") + 伝う (*tsutau*, "to go along, to travel through"). The image is of a hand moving along to guide or carry — physical, hands-on assistance. The kanji 伝 also appears in 伝える (*tsutaeru*, "to convey"), suggesting the passing of effort from one person to another.
Cultural note
In Japanese workplace and family culture, offering to 手伝う without being asked is considered a virtue and a sign of social awareness (*気が利く, ki ga kiku*). Accepting help is equally culturally loaded — it's common to politely decline once or twice before accepting. Note that 手伝う implies helping *someone else's* task; using 助ける (*tasukeru*, also "to help") carries a stronger nuance of rescuing from difficulty.
