yasumu

Definition

Show translation

I'm tired, so let's rest for a bit.

Etymology

From Old Japanese *yasumu*, related to 安 (yasu, "peace/ease"). The root *yasu-* conveys a sense of settling into calm or relief, and is shared with adjectives like 安い (yasui, "cheap/easy") and 安らか (yasuraka, "peaceful").

Cultural note

In Japan, openly saying you need to 休む (yasumu) can carry social weight. Taking a sick day (病欠, byōketsu) is sometimes seen as an imposition on colleagues, reflecting the cultural value of 迷惑をかけない (not causing trouble for others). That said, awareness of work-life balance and mental health has grown significantly, especially among younger generations. Note that 休む also means being *absent* — e.g., 学校を休む (to miss school) — so context matters.
