Etymology

From Old Japanese *ame*, reconstructed as the native Yamato word for rain. The kanji ้›จ is a pictograph: the top horizontal stroke represents the sky, the box below it is a cloud, and the four dots depict falling raindrops โ€” one of the most visually intuitive characters in the entire script.

Cultural note

Rain holds deep cultural significance in Japan. The rainy season (ๆข…้›จ, *tsuyu*, literally "plum rain") arrives in early June โ€” right around this word's scheduled date โ€” and lasts roughly six weeks. Japanese has a remarkably rich vocabulary for rain: *kirisame* (้œง้›จ, drizzle), *harusame* (ๆ˜ฅ้›จ, spring rain / also a type of glass noodle), and *niwakame* (ไฟ„้›จ, sudden shower), reflecting centuries of close attention to precipitation in an agricultural society. Note that ้›จ can also be read *u* in Sino-Japanese compounds (e.g., ้›จๅคฉ *uten*, rainy weather).
