Russians often speak of feelings with striking directness and depth in literature and everyday life. Classic Russian authors — Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Chekhov — placed *чувство* at the center of their explorations of the human condition. Note that *чувство* covers both physical senses (e.g., *чувство голода* — a feeling of hunger) and emotional states, making it broader than the English word "emotion." Don't confuse it with *ощущение* (sensation, physical perception), which is more bodily and sensory.
