Russian Level 2 noun

дорога

doroga

/dɐˈro.ɡə/

Definition

A road or path that people travel on; also used to mean a journey or way to somewhere.

Example

Эта дорога ведёт прямо в центр города.

Show translation

This road leads straight to the city center.

Etymology

From Old East Slavic *дорога*, shared across Slavic languages (cf. Polish *droga*, Ukrainian *дорога*). Likely related to a root meaning "to clear" or "to make a path," connected to Proto-Slavic *dorgà*, possibly linked to the verb *дёргать* (to pull, to tear) in the sense of clearing a way through terrain.

Cultural note

In Russian literature and culture, *дорога* carries deep metaphorical weight far beyond the physical road. Gogol famously ends *Dead Souls* with a lyrical apostrophe to the open road as a symbol of Russia's destiny. The phrase **счастливого пути!** ("have a good journey!") literally means "a lucky road to you." Russians also say **дорога домой** ("the road home") with a warm, nostalgic tone. Be aware that *дорога* can mean both the physical road surface and the entire journey — context usually clarifies which sense is intended.
