Guests are coming to our place tonight.
Etymology
From Old Church Slavonic *гость* (gostĭ), meaning "stranger, guest, merchant." Shares a root with Latin *hostis* ("stranger, enemy") and *hospes* ("host, guest") via Proto-Indo-European *gʰóstis* ("stranger"). The same PIE root gives English "host," "guest," and "hostile" — a reminder that in ancient times, a stranger could be either a welcomed guest or a feared enemy.
Cultural note
Russian hospitality culture places enormous importance on guests. The proverb «Гость в дом — Бог в дом» ("A guest in the house is God in the house") captures the tradition of treating visitors with great generosity and warmth. Being a *гость* typically means being offered food and tea at minimum, regardless of the hour. Note also the set phrase **в гостях** (visiting someone, "being a guest"), as in *Я был в гостях у бабушки* — "I was visiting my grandmother."
