Russian Level 1 noun

кухня

kukhnya

/ˈkʊxnʲə/

Definition

The room in a home where food is prepared and cooked; also refers to a style of cooking or cuisine.

Example

Мама готовит обед на кухне каждый день.

Show translation

Mom cooks lunch in the kitchen every day.

Etymology

Borrowed in the 18th century from German *Küche* ("kitchen"), which itself descends from Late Latin *coquīna*, derived from *coquere* ("to cook"). The same Latin root gives English "cook" and French *cuisine*.

Cultural note

In Russian culture, the kitchen has historically been much more than a cooking space — particularly during the Soviet era, the *кухня* served as the primary gathering place for intimate conversation, debate, and socializing among friends and family. The phrase *кухонные разговоры* ("kitchen conversations") still evokes candid, private talk away from public ears.
