Show translation
The night was warm and quiet.
Etymology
From Old East Slavic *ночь (nočĭ), from Proto-Slavic *noťь, itself from Proto-Indo-European *nókʷts ("night"). Cognate with Latin *nox*, Greek *νύξ (nýx)*, German *Nacht*, and English *night* — all descendants of the same ancient root, making it one of the most universal words across European languages.
Cultural note
Russian literature and folk tradition give ночь a rich, almost mystical quality — from Pushkin's famous lyric "Я помню чудное мгновенье" to countless folk songs set under a starlit night sky. The greeting "Спокойной ночи!" (Spokóynoy nóchi! — "Good night!") is a warm, everyday farewell before sleep. Note that Russians use the genitive form in this phrase, literally meaning "of a peaceful night," wishing you one.
