From Proto-Slavic *pъtica, itself from *pъtь ("bird"), related to Old Church Slavonic пъта (pŭta). Cognates appear across all Slavic languages: Polish ptak, Czech pták, Bulgarian птица. The root is ancient and has no clear Indo-European etymology beyond Proto-Slavic, though some scholars connect it to a root meaning "to fly."

Birds carry rich symbolic weight in Russian folklore and literature. The firebird (жар-птица, zhar-ptitsa) is one of the most iconic magical creatures in Russian fairy tales — a glowing, elusive bird whose feather brings both fortune and danger to the hero who seeks it. Separately, the phrase "вольная птица" (vol'naya ptitsa, "free bird") is a common idiom for a person who answers to no one. Russian speakers also use "птица высокого полёта" ("a bird of high flight") to describe someone of high status or importance.
