solntse

/ˈson.tsə/

Show translation

The sun rose early and lit up the whole room.

Etymology

From Old Church Slavonic *сълньцє (sŭlĭntse)*, descended from Proto-Slavic *sŭlnĭce*, a diminutive form of *sŭlnĭ*, which traces back to Proto-Indo-European *sóh₂wl̥* — the same root that gives Latin *sol*, English *sun*, and German *Sonne*. The silent **л** in modern Russian spelling is a historical relic of this ancestor form, preserved in writing long after it ceased to be pronounced.

Cultural note

The sun holds a deep place in Russian folk culture. The ancient Slavic solar festival **Масленица** (Maslenitsa), celebrated before the Orthodox Lent, features round bliny (pancakes) as a symbol of the sun. The affectionate diminutive **солнышко** (*solnyshko*) is one of the most common terms of endearment in Russian — parents, partners, and friends use it freely, roughly equivalent to English "sunshine" or "sweetheart."
