Show translation

We were sitting in the shade of a big tree.

Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *těnь, related to Old Church Slavonic *těnь. Cognate with Polish cień and Czech stín, all tracing back to a Proto-Indo-European root *tē- ("to melt, dissolve") or *skē- ("shade, shadow"), with relatives in Greek σκιά (skiá, "shadow") and Latin scaena ("stage, scene").

Cultural note

In Russian poetic tradition, тень (shadow/shade) carries deep literary weight — from Pushkin to Akhmatova, a person's тень can represent the soul, a ghost, or a lost past. The phrase тень сомнения ("shadow of a doubt") is also widely used in formal and journalistic language. Note that Russian тень covers both English "shadow" (the dark shape cast by an object) and "shade" (the cooler, darker area out of direct sun) — English speakers must infer the meaning from context. The date, June 22, is also the anniversary of the German invasion of the USSR in 1941 (Operation Barbarossa), a historically heavy day when the concept of a looming shadow carries particular resonance.
