Show translation
She bought a beautiful flower at the market.
Etymology
From Old East Slavic *цвѣтъ (cvětŭ), meaning "flower" or "color/bloom," derived from Proto-Slavic *květъ. Related to the verb цвести ("to bloom") and to цвет ("color"), since both share the root idea of something bright coming into being. Cognates appear across all Slavic languages: Polish kwiat, Czech květ, Bulgarian цвят.
Cultural note
Flowers carry deep cultural weight in Russia. Gifting flowers is a serious social ritual — you must always give an odd number of stems (1, 3, 5…) to a living person; even numbers (2, 4…) are reserved strictly for funerals. On June 20, Russia is in full summer bloom, and цветок is everywhere — in dachas, markets, and hand-picked from roadsides to give to teachers or hosts. A single цветок is also a classic romantic gesture.
