Show translation

Her smile makes everyone around her happy.

Etymology

Derived from the East Slavic verb *ulybati sya* ("to smile"), related to Old Church Slavonic *lybь* ("pleasant appearance"). The root is connected to a Proto-Slavic word for a gentle, pleasing look, and shares distant kinship with the verb *любить* (lyubit', "to love"), pointing to the warm, affectionate quality of a smile.

Cultural note

Russians are famously perceived as unsmiling in public — a cultural norm rooted in the idea that smiling at strangers signals insincerity or even stupidity (there is even a proverb: «Смех без причины — признак дурачины», "Laughter without reason is a sign of foolishness"). However, within close social circles, warmth and genuine smiles are very much present. Tourists are sometimes caught off guard by this contrast. Don't mistake a neutral face for unfriendliness!
