Russian Level 1 noun

утро

utro

/ˈutrə/

Definition

The early part of the day, from the time you wake up until noon.

Example

Каждое утро она пьёт кофе у окна.

Show translation

Every morning she drinks coffee by the window.

Etymology

From Old East Slavic *утро (utro), itself from Proto-Slavic *jutro, related to the root for "dawn" shared across Slavic languages (cf. Polish *jutro* "tomorrow", Bulgarian *утре* "tomorrow"). Ultimately linked to Proto-Indo-European *aus- ("to shine, dawn"), the same root that gives Latin *aurora* and English *east*.

Cultural note

Russians commonly greet each other with «Доброе утро!» (Good morning!) until around noon, after which «Добрый день!» (Good day!) takes over. The phrase «утро вечера мудренее» — literally "the morning is wiser than the evening" — is a beloved Russian proverb equivalent to "sleep on it," reflecting a cultural trust in rest and fresh perspective.
