We met with friends in the evening at a café.

Etymology

From Old Church Slavonic *вечеръ* (večerŭ), cognate with Lithuanian *vãkaras* and Gothic *wakrs* ("evening"). The root traces back to Proto-Indo-European *wekʷ-ero-*, related to the idea of "lateness" or the sun's descent. Closely related to the word *вечеря* (an archaic/literary term for supper), which survives in modern Ukrainian and Church Slavonic contexts.

Cultural note

Russians often observe a strong culture of evening gatherings — *вечер* is prime time for family dinners, catching up with friends, or watching television together. The greeting *Добрый вечер!* ("Good evening!") is used from roughly 6 p.m. onward and is considered more refined than a plain *Привет* in formal or semi-formal settings. Note: don't confuse *вечер* (evening) with *ужин* (dinner/supper) — the word refers to the time of day, not the meal itself.
